A Brief Look At Feng Shui – Part 1

You could look at Feng Shui as having an underlying theme of nature and its concepts will relate in some respects to green-living.

  • First, the arrangement of furniture is very important. With beds or seating, you should try to have them placed so that when they are in use you have a clear path of sight towards the door or entrance to that room. Furthermore, the positioning should allow you to see so much of the room as possible. For example, bed-heads will be placed on the back wall of a room in the direction of the door.
  • You will need adequate and good storage solutions so that everything is neatly kept in place rather than cluttering up spaces and the flow of nature’s energy.
  • Never use dried flowers as these are considered dead and therefore don’t provide positive energy – always use fresh flowers and plants.

  • Colours play a vital role in Feng Shui. The five elements are represented by colour so this will help you decide which colours to use and will be most beneficial for providing positive energy. We’ll look a little closer at the colours which are predominantly used in Feng Shui later on in this mini series; but for the basics it’s enough to tell you that wood is represented by green or brown; fire by reds and oranges; earth not surprisingly by light earthy tones; metal by white or grey and water blue or black.
  • Window dressings should be non-fussy and allow plenty of natural light enter the room. Curtains and curtain poles should be made of natural materials; for example cotton curtains hung from wooden curtains poles are ideal. If you’re not keen on curtains blinds are a great alternative. Opt for wooden blinds rather than plastic ones whenever possible.
  • Make sure you use an appropriate Feng Shui colour for walls and floor. If you choose wallpaper or fabric with a bold pattern make sure the shapes are appropriate for the room. You can bring five Feng Shui elements into a room with shapes. Wood is represented by rectangular shapes; fire by triangles; earth is represented by squares; metal rounds and circles and water by wavy shapes – as seen in gentle waves on the sea.
